Who needs air in their aquarium and why? There are several reasons to incorporate air. Air can be a permanent feature or it can just be used under certain circumstances. As a permanent feature air by the use of an air operated aquarium ornament can add an interesting focal point in your décor. If ornaments do not feature in your aquarium scene the there are small air stones round or cylindrical. Varying length air bricks, bubble curtains and bubble walls, also in varying lengths, all of these can be hidden in the substrate, under bog wood or rocks etc, fish do like to swim through bubbles. In a heavily stocked aquarium air is recommended. Fish do deplete the water of oxygen as through osmosis they use it as a natural ‘breathing’ tool the same way we do. So it helps to keep aquarium inhabitants healthy and happy. The occasional use of air comes into its own in fry tanks. Where egg laying parents in the wild would fan the eggs for water flow then an air stone cleverly placed will do the same job. Live born fry also appreciate oxygen rich water. Either in the main aquarium or in a quarantine or hospital tank where treatment is going to be administered, an oxygen supply is often vital for recovery, all chemical treatments deplete the water of oxygen putting sickly fish under even more stress.
